The Spence neighbourhood is located in inner-city Winnipeg and on Treaty 1 Territory; traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene Peoples and Homeland of the Métis Nation. This summer, Spence Neighbourhood Association (SNA) partnered with Indigenous Knowledge Keeper Val Vint and local arts organization Art City to offer outdoor neighbourhood art-making workshops that explored three community parks in the area and led to the design and creation of park wayfinding signage. To celebrate the end of these workshops, SNA worked with Val and Art City to develop a park and garden tour and performative walk. Guests had the opportunity to make art, hear musical performances, enjoy delicious treats and witness the unveiling of new community-created garden signs. .. Le quartier Spence est situé au cœur du centre-ville de Winnipeg et se trouve sur le territoire du Traité no 1; terres traditionnelles des peuples Anishinaabe, Cri, Oji-Cri, Dakota et Déné, et terre natale de la Nation métisse. Cet été, la Spence Neighbourhood Association (SNA) s'est associée au Gardien du Savoir autochtone Val Vint et à l'organisme artistique local Art City pour offrir des ateliers de création artistique en plein air. Ces ateliers ont exploré trois parcs communautaires de la région et mené à la conception et à la création de panneaux de signalisation. Pour célébrer la fin de ces ateliers, SNA a collaboré avec Val et Art City pour mettre au point une visite du parc et du jardin ainsi qu'une randonnée performative. Les invités ont eu l'occasion de créer de l'art, d'assister à des performances musicales, de savourer de délicieuses gâteries et d'assister au dévoilement de nouvelles enseignes de jardin créées par la communauté. ….
…. “We have this Indigenous park called Chief Grizzly. The vision for it came from the community. It was 10 years in the making and it was meant to be a place where people can connect with Indigenous plants, where Elders can teach young people. But we haven’t been doing enough to let it live up to its potential. Elder Val Vint led our third Welcome to This Place workshop. It started with Val going through every single plant in the park, telling us how it was used, sharing knowledge from her grandmother, sharing stories. Then, each participant sat next to a plant that spoke to them, that they found particularly interesting. They sat next to it, sketched it, then did a stencil. Everyone sat next to a different plant. The results were beautiful. When we laid them out together, it just made sense to make them the sign for the park.” .. « Nous avons un parc Autochtone appelé Chief Grizzly. La vision du parc est issue de la communauté. Ce parc est le résultat d’une conception d’une durée de 10 ans; et il a été conçu comme lieu où les gens peuvent se “connecter” aux plantes autochtones, où les aînés peuvent enseigner aux jeunes. Mais, nous n'en avons pas fait assez pour permettre au parc de réaliser son plein potentiel. L’aînée Val Vint a dirigé notre troisième atelier Welcome to This Place. Pour débuter l’atelier, Val nous a présenté chacune des plantes présentes dans le parc et nous a raconté comment elles étaient et sont utilisées, partageant ainsi les connaissances de sa grand-mère, partageant des histoires. Tous les participants se sont ensuite assis près d’une plante qui leur parlait ou qu’ils trouvaient particulièrement intéressante. Ils se sont assis auprès d’elle, en ont fait un croquis et ont ensuite créé un pochoir. Tout le monde s’était assis près d’une plante différente. Les résultats étaient beaux. Quand nous les avons placés les uns à côté des autres, il devenait évident que nous devions les utiliser comme enseigne du parc. » ….
