Evaluation is critical. It’s how we know if the work we are doing is making the impact we’ve anticipated. Collecting evaluative material throughout a project gives us the information we need to tailor our work to our participants and to course-correct when needed. 1. Tracking attendance
Carefully documenting the number of attendees at each workshop and event and noting increases and decreases in participation is vital to evaluating how a project is being received by the community it’s been designed for. Making overall participation targets (i.e. we hope to have x number of people attend a given workshop or event) and then checking to see if these are met is useful in determining the efficacy of your outreach strategy. Noticing sudden dips in participation can help signal a need to rejig. Conversely, exceeding targets can signal a need to increase workshop support.

Il est essentiel de soigneusement documenter le nombre de participants à chaque atelier et évènement et de noter les fluctuations de participation afin d’évaluer la façon dont un projet est reçu par la communauté pour laquelle il a été conçu. Il faut également définir des objectifs de participation globaux (par exemple, nous espérons que x nombre de personnes assistent à un atelier ou à un évènement donné), puis vérifier si ces objectifs sont atteints, ce qui est utile pour déterminer l’efficacité de sa stratégie de sensibilisation. Le fait de remarquer une baisse soudaine de participation peut signaler la nécessité d'adopter une nouvelle stratégie. De même, le fait d'avoir surpassé vos objectifs peut indiquer le besoin d'augmenter le soutien apporté à vos ateliers.

Asking participants to share their experiences through informal interviews, surveys and/or feedback sessions is an important part of project evaluation. When working with a new group, consider including a debrief session in every workshop as you get to know each other. Feedback and testimonials from participants can be important ingredients for reporting to funders and supporters and for future funding applications.

2. Solliciter des commentaires

Lorsque vous travaillez avec un nouveau groupe, envisagez d'inclure une séance de compte rendu à chaque atelier au fur et à mesure que vous apprenez à vous connaître. Les commentaires et les témoignages de vos participants peuvent être des éléments importants lorsque viendra le temps de remplir vos rapports aux bailleurs de fonds et aux donateurs, ainsi que pour les futures demandes de financement.

Sometimes participants offer up positive and/or negative feedback which we are careful to listen for and then ask to record. Remaining approachable and open to feedback will help ensure participants feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and impressions.
